Category: Mini Lessons

A mini lesson is a short lesson segment that is based on a specific lesson or topic. It is not like a teaching technique which is a general teaching method that can be used in many situations. They are not object lessons which rely on an object to teach a gospel principle and are usually lesson openers or closers.
Mini lessons are content specific and meant to be a part of the doctrinal teaching, or meat, of your lesson. A mini lesson usually takes between 5-30 minutes to present. I recommend that you plan your lesson time to include several mini lessons. The change in subject and activity will help keep students engaged.

Seminary Mom used lunch sacks to emphasize the importance of the material in 3 Nephi -- truly a spiritual feast. Kids in her class added notecards to their lunch sacks each day during the lesson to add to their feast. It's a great example of how to carry a theme over multiple days for lesson […]
Seminary Mom is big on hands-on activities, something I think is very important. Here are a couple of her ideas for using art to teach different messages in the scriptures: Principles to Live by (Helaman 15-16) Malachi 3 Principles to Live By Today our scripture block was Helaman 15-16. Using the manual I introduced several […]

Here's a great example of using drama to help gospel students learn from Seminary Mom: One of my number one desires as a seminary teacher is to have my students fall in love with the scriptures. I want them to know these individuals we read about who really lived a long time ago. I want […]

Study (in advance) John 10:1–18. Tell the children to sit anywhere in the Primary room. Explain that the room is like a sheepfold and their teacher is their “shepherd.” If they will listen and follow their shepherd’s voice, they will learn a lot this year. Have each shepherd call out his/her class by each child’s […]

One's attitude regarding circumstances and people depends upon their attitude and what they are looking for... positive things or negative things. We all followed Jesus in the pre-mortal life. We all fought to keep our agency and be allowed to choose in this life. I used this one in Primary many years ago - First I had the kids count off, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, . . . so that each child was assigned a […]
This lesson is different than any 'obstacle course' object lesson, but it has a great point. Often times in life, we place obstacles in our way that really don't need to be there. Such obstacles include our own weaknesses, sins, pride, grudges, drama, stress, envy- you name it! Other 'obstacles' might really not be obstacles […]
Have a youth stand on a stool and proceed to push them off without them expecting it! They were not prepared, so they fell right off. Ask them to get back on and then try to push them off again. This time (usually) they don't fall off but they are still quite "moveable" now give […]
